Trade deficit for Jan-Apr at -7.7%

According to CYSTAT data released on Friday, exports of goods for January-April 2003 have dropped by 14% compared to the corresponding period of 2002. The export activity for January-April stood at CYP 153.2 million against CYP 178.1 million in 2002.

Imports have reported a drop of 9.1%, reflecting the overall slowdown in consumer demand, while exports for the same period declined to CYP 740.6 million against CYP 814.8 in 2002.

As a result, trade deficit dropped 7.7% to CYP 587.4 million compared to CYP 636.7 million in 2002.

The EU countries absorbed 58% of the Cyprus exports and supplied 56% of the island’s imports.
