Trade deficit records annual rise in the first six months of 2021

The trade deficit increased by €573.6 mn in the first six months of the year, compared with the same period last year, rising to €2,657.4 mn in January – June 2021 from €2,083.8 mn in the corresponding period of 2020.

The Statistical Service of Cyprus said Monday that total imports of goods in January – June 2021 amounted to €3,975.1 mn compared with €3,625.4 mn in January – June 2020, recording an increase of 9.6%.

Total exports of goods decreased to €1,317.7 mn from €1,541.7 mn in January – June 2020, registering a decrease of 14,5%.
According to preliminary data of Cystat, July also saw an increase in the trade deficit of €30.3 mn. Total imports of goods rose to €718.2 mn from €668.9 mn in June 2020, recording an increase of 7.4%.

Imports from other EU Member States in June 2021 increased to €4750 mn and from third countries €243.1 mn, compared with €390.2 mn and €278.7 mn respectively in June 2020. Imports in June 2021 include the transfer of economic ownership of mobile transport equipment (vessels and aircrafts), with total value of €80.2 mn compared with €99.7 mn in the same month last year.

Total exports of goods in June 2021 increased to €294.9 mn from €275.9 mn in June 2020, an increase of 6.9%. Exports to other EU Member States in June 2021 were €82.2 mn and to third countries €212.7 mn, compared with €122.9 mn and €153.0 mn respectively in June 2020. Exports in June 2021 include the transfer of economic ownership of mobile transport equipment (vessels), with total value of €80.5 mn compared with €87.2 mn in June 2020.

In May the trade deficit was up by €164,7 compared with the same month of 2020.

Cystat said that total imports of goods amounted to €656.3 mn from €470.9 mn in May 2020, recording an increase of 39.4%.

Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions, in the fifth month of the year were €125.5 mn compared with €104.8 mn in May 2020, recording an increase of 19.8%. Domestic exports of industrial products were €111.2 mn from €92.7 mn, whilst domestic exports of agricultural products stood at €12.4 mn from €10.6 mn.

Exports of foreign products, including stores and provisions, in May 2021 were €100.4 mn as compared to €173.5 mn in May 2020, recording a decrease of 42.1%.
