CY President: Searching drilling to start soon

13/09/2011 14:04
The Republic of Cyprus decided that it will proceed with the drilling of plot 12 of the Exclusive Economic Zone so as to begin works for the tracking down of hydrocarbon deposits.

The decision was announced by the President of the Republic today, who chaired the long bi-ministerial meeting, attended by the Ministers of Finance, Commerce, Agriculture and Interior.

Mr. Christofias announced that the agreement with Noble Energy for the exploitation of hydrocarbon deposits in EEZ has been renewed.

Referring to the efforts so far, he said that the signing of agreements with neighbouring countries such as Egypt, Israel and Lebanon for the delimitation of the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus is a step of great importance.

Avoiding specifying the date of start of the searching drilling, he said that its aim is to ascertain whether there are hydrocarbon deposits. The geophysical researches show that this probability is high. “More than that, the drilling will specify the quantity and quality of the potential deposits. This will determine the prospect and ability of exploitation of the underwater stock.

Turkey’s stance is unacceptable

Commenting on Turkey’s stance, he stressed that “the exploitation of the natural wealth is a recognized sovereign right of each state. This sovereign right is exercised by the Republic of Cyprus with full respect of the international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. All decisions and actions are in line with those frameworks. Since the Republic decided to proceed with the exploitation of its sea wealth, Turkey does everything to question and to prevent its actions. Its policy is unacceptable and condemned”, he said.

The President did not omit to thank Greece for its support to Cyprus, stressing that the cooperation with the Greek government is constant.

Mr. Christofias called all political forces to unity and stressed that after his return from the General Assembly of the United Nations, he will organize a meeting of the Informal Council of the Party Leaders.
