Energy Developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, Nicosia`s strategy concerning its hydrocarbon reserves, as well as internal market and RES issues were discussed on Friday morning, during a meeting between Cyprus` Energy Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis and a delegation of the European Parliament`s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy.

"Cyprus plays a very strong role for energy security everywhere in Europe" stated Martina Werner, the head of the EP committee, saying she was"impressed" by Cyprus` energy policy and invited Lakkotrypis to brief the EP committee members in Brussels. MEP Neoklis Sylikiotis said from his part that Cyprus can be a bridge in energy matters.

In statements after the meeting, in Nicosia, Lakkotrypis said they discussed with the delegation hydrocarbon discoveries in the region, as well as Cyprus` efforts to exploit own natural gas reserves and provide an alternative energy route for Europe.

Moreover, he said they exchanged views on Cyprus` internal energy market, both concerning renewable energy sources (RES) as well as regarding the new model of competitive market the Ministry wants to introduce.

The dialogue will continue, probably also in Brussels, said the Minister.

Werner from her part underlined the need for "more Europe" in the region and invited Lakkotrypis to address the EP committee and engage in discussions for a better European policy for Cyprus. The contacts in Nicosia during the last days were only the beginning, Werner noted.

AKEL and European United Left MEP Neoklis Sylikiotis said it was important to highlight Cyprus` potential role as a bridge for energy, between the EU and the Eastern Mediterranean.

He said that the EP committee was currently discussing its report on the EU`s Energy Union, which in order to work, requires energy isolation for countries like Cyprus to be lifted, while securing new routes for Europe`s energy security.
