Demand for power hits historic high

26/07/2007 16:45
The demand for power will hit a new historic high on Thursday, EAC Chairman, Charilaos Stavrakis stated today. Mr. Stavrakis said that demand on Tuesday stood at 990 megawatt, on Wednesday at 970 and today 3% higher than yesterday. “This means that we expect a demand of 1000 megawatt, which is a record high for Cyprus”, he added.

According to Mr. Stavrakis, the maximum power of EAC is 1042 megawatt. “You can see that the security margins are trivial. Any failure in the distribution or production system may cause a blackout. We are lucky at the moment. The staff of EAC is working hard to minimize the possibilities for a blackout”, he stressed.

Mr. Stavrakis also reminded that blackouts in Greece when the country is hit by a heat wave are usual. “Last year, Germany suffered blackouts for many hours. We are lucky in Cyprus that everything works satisfactorily”, he said.

Meanwhile, an EAC announcement says that the authority takes all the necessary measures for the sufficient production of power in summer 2008.
