President to meet energy companies

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades is set to hold meetings in Nicosia with the chiefs of key energy companies by July 22 the last day before the deadline of the 3rd licensing round for blocks within Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides said on Sunday.

In statements in Pafos, Christodoulides also pointed out that Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis will be travelling first to Britain and then to the US to hold discussions with the companies, which have already expressed an interest.

The increased interest expressed in the 3rd licensing round is a clear vote of confidence for the Republic of Cyprus` EEZ, he said.

He further expressed the hope that this preliminary interest will become a specific expression of interest before the end of the licensing round on July 22.

Meanwhile, the Government Spokesman said that President Anastasiades will be sending parliamentary party leaders a framework on how the National Council, the country`s top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus issue, should operate in order to enhance its effectiveness.

Referring to criticism already expressed on the part of other political parties Christodoulides suggested it would be wiser for political parties to read the framework first before reacting whether in writing or in public.
