SOS for state finances, says OEB

14/08/2003 10:39
The Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) demanded from the Finance Minister on Thursday the reduction of the admission scale in the public sector to deal with the fiscal deficit, which is “one of the most significant problems of the Cyprus economy”. In a letter sent to the FinMin, Markos Kyprianou, OEB stresses the need to take the proper consolidating measures against state finances.

OEB has also requested the increase of the retirement limit to 65 years (as in the private sector) and the adoption of a flexible timetable introducing at least three working afternoons. According to newspaper “Phileleftheros”, “the cost of the public sector grows by CYP 50-60 mln per annum without new pay rises”.

On the other hand, the Pancyprian Public Employees Trade Union (PASYDY) has expressed its disagreement on OEB’s proposals, insisting that the civil servants enjoy same advantages as the private sector employees.
