Council of Min takes final decisions for CAIR

02/11/2005 14:36
After the end of the meeting for the future of the Cyprus Airways’ employees, government Spokesman, Kypros Chrysostomides said that the Council of Ministers evaluated the dramatic financial condition of the national carrier and the remarks of the European Commission and had three options: either to close the company, or to reject the reorganization plan or to amend the plan. “The government decided to adopt the third option, which entails further salary cuts, dismissals and abolition of services”, he said. The plan will be submitted to Brussels tomorrow.

Invited to comment whether the government’s amendments will be submitted to the trade unions, Mr. Chrysostomides was negative. “The trade unions have rejected the former reorganization plan. The government will, therefore, submit the action plan to the EU without requesting their consent”, the spokesman said. Mr. Chrysostomides also admitted that the amendments are tougher and Cyprus Airways has losses of £20 million every year.

Commenting on the fact that the employees are not responsible for the mismanagement and the political decisions, Mr. Chrysostomides explained that painful decisions will make the company viable.

In the afternoon, the Finance and Transport Ministers are expected to prepare the final text of the plan.

On the other hand, the trade unions expressed their anger for the latest development and insisted that they will oppose to such unilateral decisions.
