Labour Min intervenes in CAIR crisis

19/07/2007 14:22
The labour crisis in Cyprus Airways after the announcement of the pilots’ 5-hour strike on Saturday urged the Labour Ministry to intervene at 12.30 pm today. The intervention is still in progress.

The upcoming strike has aroused strong feelings to all. According to STEK, “the strike of the Cyprus Airways pilots in the middle of the tourist season hits the reliability of the national carrier and the competitiveness of the Cyprus tourist product”.

“In a period that Cyprus Airways is trying to enforce the restructuring plan in order to deal with the economic crisis that hits the company, this decision is inconceivable”, STEK added.

Similarly, the Cyprus Tour Operators Association appealed to the pilots not to go on a strike, since the Cypriots will be forced to cancel their scheduled holidays abroad and the incoming tourism will be hit severely. “We also appeal to the Cyprus Airways Management to have talks with the pilots and the staff in order to find the best possible solution”, the announcement added.

Meanwhile Cyprus Airways declared that it is dedicated to the existing Restructuring Plan submitted to the EU.

In its announcement, CAIR believes that the efforts on behalf of the pilots’ trade union to question the plan will not differentiate the Company’s commitment to enforce it. “A return to the period before the Restructuring Plan is not allowed”, the announcement noted.
