Strikes in certain services only, says CCCI

10/10/2003 10:24
The Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) are considering appealing to court for compensations, after being hit by the strike measures called by the Heavy Load Vehicle Drivers. CCCI has also stressed the need to promote legislation for the restriction of the right to strike to specific services only.

According to a CCCI announcement, the bill which had been set under discussion in the past, provides that strike measures should be called in certain services only (ports, airports, fuel etc), introducing the “mechanism of arbitration”, where the decision of the arbitrator must be respected by both the trade unions and the employers.

On the extraordinary meeting of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce to take place next week, CCCI will bring up for discussion “the protection of economy from the arbitrary strike measures in vital sectors” and will promote the legislation for strikes in specific services to protect the Cyprus citizens.

CCCI was represented by Chairman Vasilis Rologis and General Secretary Panayiotis Loizides, who stated that “the European Union is after a correct completion of its decision to expand”.
