CAIR: Action plan by flying crew

14/06/2005 15:58
The Cyprus Airways flying crew submitted on Tuesday the trade union’s proposals based on the strategic plan for the reorganization of the national carrier. It is probably the first time that the trade unions prepare certain proposals for the survival of Cyprus Airways.

Trade unions basically admitted that the staff is supernumerary. The largest European air companies employ 12 pilots and 34 flight attendants per aircraft, while Cyprus Airways employs 11 pilots and 27 flight attendants per aircraft. The difference in the ground personnel is bigger. Although European companies employ 80-90 employees per aircraft, Cyprus Airways employs 140-180 employees.

The flying crew trade unions urged the company to promote early retirement plans, other flexible plans on the working conditions, as well as part-time employment. Their strategic plan provides for the employment of an Executive Chairman, the reorganization of the managerial and administrative structure and the reorganization of the staff in order to increase productivity.

It also provides for the gradual promotion of privatization, the reorganization of the fleet and the abridgement of the three air companies to one.

The trade union representatives stressed the need to prepare strategic plan before August since this will be critical for the future of Cyprus Airways. The company has losses of £2 million despite the increase in passenger traffic, they added.
