Cyprus Cabinet on Monday approved a bill which will be regulating the issuing of a certificate of criminal record for all corporations which are interested in submitting a bid for public tenders.

Yiannakis Omirou, acting President of the Republic, presided over the meeting of the Cabinet.

Speaking to the press after the meeting , Deputy Government Spokesman Victoras Papadopoulos said that bill will be filling a gap in the legislation regarding the issue of criminal record certificates for legal entities (companies), following the advice of Attorney General.

Furthermore, he said, the bill set the way of how these companies will be reclaimed in case they are convicted from a court for a criminal offense.

Papadopoulos explained that the issuing of these certificated was necessary because, given the gap that existed in the law, all the certificates issued up to date were clean.

He added that companies wanting to apply for a public tender will be submitting the accurate certificates under the new law.

He also said that with the new bill , a step is taken in the fight against corruption.
