Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said on Wednesday evening that the country has managed to absorb €100 million from Horizon 2020, making it the greatest per capital absorption in the EU for the programme.

This, he pointed out, is evidence of the fact that for the first time there is a comprehensive framework for research and innovation which includes the cooperation of the public and private sectors, universities, research centres as well as actors such as the Cyprus Employers & Industrialists Federation (ΟΕΒ).

The President was addressing the OEB Award Ceremony on Research and Innovation, which took place in Nicosia, a presidency press release says.

He referred to the steps the government has taken but also the goals set, expressing his belief that in combination these actions will soon result in the investment on research and innovation to increase up to 1.5% of GDP.

President Anastasiades noted that the government is going ahead with the preparation of a comprehensive National Industrial Strategy for 2017-2030.

“Our goal will be the gradual increase by 2030 of total productivity by 100%, the increase of innovation indicator to 5.5, an increase of exports by 150% and an increase of industrial contribution to GDP of 20%, up from 7% in 2015,” he pointed out.
