EAC unions to strike on Monday

The four trade unions representing employees of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) announced on Friday they will go ahead with another strike on Monday, February 24.

They were on a 12 hour strike last Monday.

The unions also decided to gather outside Parliament, during a session of the Parliamentary Committee on Financial and Budgetary Affairs, to demonstrate against a privatization of semi government organizations Bill, which is under the scrutiny of legislators.

They declared that they will proceed with further measures on Tuesday, the exact details of which will probably be announced Saturday morning, which are likely to result in power cuts around the island.

On Monday, all EAC offices will remain shut. The necessary safety staff will deal with emergencies in order to avoid inconvenience to the public. It is not expected that the levels of electricity production will drop.

The unions ask that EAC is not included in the SGOs which will be privatized.

In late March 2013 the Cypriot authorities agreed with the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the IMF, collectively known as the Troika, on a €10 billion bailout.

One of the bailout’s preconditions was the implementation of a privatisations plan covering the disposal of Cyprus Telecommunications Authority and the Cyprus Ports Authority by 2016 and the Cyprus Electricity Authority by 2018 to generate €1.4 billion in order to restore public debt sustainability.

The bill should be approved by March 5.

So far three parties, the left-wing AKEL, the Social Democrats EDEK and the Greens have said they will vote against the government Bill.

Ruling Democratic Rally (DISY) said it will propose amendments to the bill, while coalition partner Democratic Party (DIKO) said it would vote for the bill if the role of the parliament in the privatisations process is enhanced.
