Fewer companies register in August

Applications to register new companies declined, for the fourth month this year, on an annual basis, figures from the Department of Registrar of Companies and Official Receiver showed on Monday.

The number of applications to register new companies stood at 910 in August, compared to 1.014 in the same month last year, presenting a decline of 10.2%.

August is the fourth month in 2017 that sees a decline in the number of applications, following a continuous increase in 2016.

Compared to the previous month, the number of applications was down by 30%.

During the first eight months of 2017 the number of applications stood at 8.662, against 8.668 in the same period last year, presenting a marginal fall.

Registered companies stood at 214.232 at the end of August, whereas new registrations rose to 8.515, compared to 7.569 at the end of July.

Registrations of foreign companies in the first eight months of 2017 exceeded the registrations throughout the year 2016.

The new foreign companies reached 65 in the first eight months of the year, compared with 62 in 2016.
