The Greek state intends to file a legal action against Louis Cruises and the insurer of Sea Diamond, which sank off Santorini coast in April, Greek Merchant Marine Minister, Manolis Kefaloyiannis announced to Parliament on Thursday.

According to newspaper “Imerisia”, Mr. Kefaloyiannis stressed that his Ministry intends to claim €1 billion for the damages.

In a letter sent to nine Ministries, S. Aegean municipality, Cyclades Municipality and the local authorities of Santorini, the Ministry requested an evaluation of the damages. All data will be assessed by a committee introduced by the Ministry. According to Mr. Kefaloyiannis, the cost of the damage will include the state’s expenses for the saving of the passengers and the pollution, as well as the additional cost of the campaign for the support of tourism in Santorini.

The Minister said that 400 of the 500 tonnes of oil have already been drained.

On the other hand, Louis announced that it has done everything it could to help prevent any environmental disaster. The Company continues to contribute to the drain of fuel tanks off the island’s coast and is fully insured for any possible environmental pollution.

Sea Diamond sank in April. Two passengers are still missing.
