Press: BOCY enjoys profits despite crisis

The major issues in today’s financial press are the Bank of Cyprus’ results for the first quarter of 2008 and the criticisms against the government for the expensiveness.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” refers to the financial results of Bank of Cyprus for the first quarter of 2008. The bank’s profits reached €116 million, recording an annual increase of 9%. The Group confirmed the targets for the three-year strategic plan 2008 – 2010, where it anticipates profits of €540 million in 2008.

Elsewhere the newspaper reports that MIG is not interested in any Greek – Cypriot bank.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Politis” refers to Bank of Cyprus’ results for the first quarter of 2008. According to the report, the Group’s profits recorded an increase of 9% to €116 million. Despite the negative climate due to the international crisis, the competition in Greece and Cyprus and the CSE drop, the bank managed to maintain its profitability.

“Politis” also highlights that Hellenic Bank confirmed its targets for 2008.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Simerini” refers to the criticisms against the government for the high prices. According to the report, the parties and SEK urged the government to stand by its citizens and to appeal to the EU for an exemption from the increase in the consumer tax on diesel.

The newspaper also reports that the Central Bank’s decision to loosen the measures for the purchase of second home relieved the property market.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Haravgi” refers to the upcoming increase in the price of diesel. According to the report, if Cyprus is not exempted, each one of the euro that it will receive from the new tax will be returned with targeted offsetting measures to the consumers that are affected.

“Haravgi” also refers to the meeting between the Cyprus Shipping Chamber and the Labour Minister, Sotiroula Charalambous.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Alithia” refers to the upcoming increase in the consumer tax of diesel. According to the report, after the statements of the French President, Nicholas Sarkozi for a postponement of the measure, the MPs urged the state to turn to the EU for an exemption.

Elsewhere the newspaper highlights that the profits of Bank of Cyprus for the first quarter of 2008 exceeded the analysts’ expectations.
