14/02/2003 09:29
The major issues in today’s financial press are the disputes among the presidential candidates with regard to the involvement of candidate, Tassos Papadopoulos in the Claridge scandal and the concerns over a price hike in diesel in case of an American intervention in Iraq.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” under the title “New disputes over the scandal” refers to the statements of the presidential candidate, Alecos Markides, and the Deputy Attorney General, Petros Clerides that blunted the tensions among the candidates.

Elsewhere “Phileleftheros” mentions that the number of companies to grant dividend in 2002 shrinks.

The “Economic” inset of newspaper “Alithia” focuses on the statements of DISY Chairman, Nicos Anastasiades, and MP Christos Pourgourides that Mr. Papadopoulos should have resigned from the Board of Claridge since he disagreed with the Company’s actions.

Elsewhere the inset highlights that tourist reservations have frozen ahead of the possible war in Iraq.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Simerini” under the title “Diesel price worries consumers” deals with the price hike in diesel that raises concerns to the consumers ahead of the possible war in Iraq. Cyprus consumers will not be affected by the increase in diesel price until March, as the Commerce Ministry needs the approval of the Parliament before it proceeds to any act.

Elsewhere the newspaper reports that the government grants CYP 60 million per annum to the farmers, while during the last ten years it has granted more than CYP 600 million.
