Press: CSE president: at the center of attention

03/10/2002 09:00
The major issue that monopolizes today’s financial press deals with the developments as far as CSE’s president is concerned, Pavlos Savvides. The reports’ titles focus on Savvides’ counter-attack and his statements – during a press conference on Wednesday evening – that this attack is due to his refusal to serve interests. The reports mention that DIKO, AKEL, DYSI and KISOS demand CSE’s president resignation. However, the Minister of Finance, Takis Klerides, has covered up Pavlos Savvides, saying that the investigation during the Stock Exchange scandal concerns the company itself and not the president of the company.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” is titled “I refused to serve interests” and “Pavlos Savvides: I do not accept lessons of sensitiveness and honesty”. The report contains Mr. Savvides statements that ‘the same situation has happened before during his time at the Ministry of Transport’, while, the CSE president went further on by saying that immense interests aim to remove him from CSE’s presidency. The newspaper also quotes the statements of Christos Pourgourides and Prodromos Prodromou, which ask for the CSE's president immediate resignation, as well as the statements of Takis Klerides, who argues that “Mr. Savvides is not to be blamed at this point of time”.

Elsewhere, the newspaper mentions that the harmonization policy is for DISY extremely important.

The “Economy-Stock Exchange” inset of newspaper “Simerini” under the title “Pavlos Savvides: I am "clean"” highlights that the president will not hand in his resignation, as this is simply ‘a war of interest’. The newspaper also cites Pavlos Savvides’ statements that “this war started while I was flying to New York, when I could not react. Then, it is not a coincidence that it is a pre-election period”.

The newspaper also commends on the fact that the name of Mr. Savvides remained at company’s files, even after his resignation from the company. Mr. Savvides pointed out that it is not his fault if the company did not proceed to proper actions after his departure.

Elsewhere, the inset highlights that the Social Security Fund debt has reached CYP 3 billion.

The “Economic” inset of newspaper “Alithia” has the title “Savvides: The war against me was declared when I refused to serve interests”. The newspaper refers to Mr. Savvides statements and his refusal to accept the accusations, however it does not contain the statements of Mr. Pourgourides and Mr. Prodromou, as well as the statements of the Minister of Finance.

Elsewhere, the inset quotes that CSE’s second stage of investigation by the Audit Committee will commence on Wednesday.
