Press: CY signs Accession Treaty

The major issue in today’s financial press is undoubtedly the signing of the EU Accession Treaty in Athens.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” under the title “Larger Europe, larger problems” reports that the largest enlargement in the history of the European Union is not only accompanied by festivities by also by greater problems, such as the low growth rate, the high rate of inflation, the deficits and the increasing unemployment. The leaders of EUR 15 and EUR 25 have to deal with the slowdown of economy, which is not only attributable to the war in Iraq.

Elsewhere the newspaper mentions that although in 2001 Cyprus’ companies allocated dividends of CYP 112 million, in 2002 dividends shrunk to a mere CYP 5.9 million.

The “Economic” inset of newspaper “Alithia” under the title “New era for Cyprus economy with the signing of the Accession Treaty” highlights that the 16th of April is a historical day for the European Union, while Cyprus political parties, trade unions and employment organization welcome the signing of the Agreement that will affect the island’s future.

Elsewhere “Alithia” points out that hotel owners would like to dismiss Cypriot hotel employees at the same time when they employ 1500 foreign workers. It is worth mentioning that 7000 foreign employees are currently working in Cyprus restaurants.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Simerini” under the title “Warnings to hotel owners” reports that the House Commerce Committee has warned hotel owners “to avoid actions against employees”. Meanwhile, the Hotel Owners’ Association, PASIXE, supports that the main aim of the Association is to secure the employment level.

Elsewhere the inset mentions that families with many children are likely to receive no benefits.
