Press: Deficit of 6% in 2011

The major issues in today’s financial press are the Finance Minister’s internal document on the fiscals, the payment of the first installment of the tax imposed on the banks and Coops and the Land Registry data on the property sales in April.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” refers to the Finance Ministry’s internal document on the fiscals, as a result of the visit of the EU representatives in Cyprus in May. According to the document, if no measures are taken the deficit will reach 6% against the commitment for a 4.5% this year and a 3% in 2012, while unemployment is expected to be shot to 8%. The European Commission will possibly demand a measure taking in the next two months.

Elsewhere the newspaper reports that property sales fell further in April, according to the Land Registry data.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Politis” refers to the payment of the first installment of the tax imposed on the banks and the Coops. According to the report, the first installment will be paid on May 31, the second in late June and two more in late September and December.

“Politis” also refers to the talks for the loosening of the payment terms of the loans that Greece received from the EU.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Simerini” refers to the confusion between Cystat and the Finance Minitry in relation to the number of the public employees. According to Cystat, the average staff in the public service in 2010 stood at 70,429 persons and in 2009 at 69,084 (+1,345). On the other hand, Mr. Stavrakis supports that the number of public employees dropped to 1,040 in 2010.

The newspaper also highlights that via a letter EAC replied to the MPs’ criticisms for the electricity prices.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Haravgi” refers to EAC’s reply to DISY President, Nicos Anastasiades, which rejected his allegations for the electricity prices one by one.

“Haravgi” also reports that the seasonal flight attendants of CAIR, who were appointed a month ago, have been dismissed.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Alithia” refers to the Land Registry data on the property sales in April. According to them, the property sales in the first four months of the year stood at 2291 against 2741 in the corresponding period of 2010 (-16%).

Elsewhere the newspaper reports that DISY urged the government to cut taxes in the electricity bills.
