Press: Dispute on measures

The major issues in today’s financial press are the dispute between the government and the opposition on the package of measures and the Inland Revenue Department’s effort to eliminate tax evasion.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” refers to the dispute between the government and the opposition on the package of measures. According to the report, DISY Vice President, Averof Neophytou stated yesterday that the package has already been decided by AKEL and PEO and was given to the Finance Minister afterwards. At the same time, DIKO Vice President, Nicholas Papadopoulos said that his party will not accept the imposition of additional taxes or the increase in the existing ones.

Elsewhere the newspaper reports that the BoD of Cyprus Airways will decide today who is going to be the CEO of the Group.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Politis” highlights that in view of the Ecofin meeting tomorrow, the Commission prepares a proposal for the prohibition of the speculating transactions aiming at the debt of the member-states.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Simerini” refers to the IRD’s effort to eliminate tax evasion. According to the report, the Department is carrying out thorough inspections to the professionals of all specialties, mostly doctors and lawyers in an effort to eliminate tax evasion.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Alithia’ refers to the government’s effort to gain money from the coins and banknotes that were not returned to be exchanged in euros. According to the report, the Startegic Program of Fiscal Consolidation includes the exploitation of huge sums that the CB will gain if coins and banknotes are not exchanged in euros. This strange measure aims to increase the state revenues.
