Press: Electricity in Northern Cyprus and salaries of semi-state organizations

Major issues of today’s financial press are the cost of modernization of EAC’s old power supply network of the regions that are to come under Greek Cypriot administration in the face of the UN solution plan, as well as the high salaries of the employees in semi-state and other independent state organizations, as reported in the annual report of the Audit General for 2001.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” under the title “RIK employees paid dearly” deals with the high salaries of the employees in several semi-state and other independent state organizations, as reported in the annual report of the Audit General for 2001. Specifically, the annual average cost for each permanent RIK employer has reached CYP 27,948 against CYP 27,220 (Central Bank (CB)), CYP 20,367 (EAC), CYP 19,605 (CYTA), CYP 25,083 (Port Authority), CYP 22,291 (KOA) and CYP 21,168 (Theatrical Organization of Cyprus). It is noted that the cost of staff in CB and RIK for 2001 reached CYP 8.05 and CYP 8.9 million respectively. As far as salaries, allowances, overtime, contributions and other benefits are concerned, the cost of staff reached CYP 8,057,000 against CYP 7,683,350 in 2000 (+4.86%).

Elsewhere “Phileleftheros” refers to the modernization of interest and capital payment regulations of the development bonds issued by the government.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Simerini” under the title “ Solution electroshock” deals with the cost of modernization of EAC’s power supply network of the regions that are to come under Greek Cypriot administration in the face of the Annan’s plan. Specifically, EAC has promoted a draft plan of network expansion to the regions that are to become under Greek Cypriot administration according to the UN plan, while the cost of power supply for Famagusta is to reach CYP 25-30 million. Finally, the total cost of power supply for all the regions that are to come under Greek Cypriot administration is to reach CYP 100 million.

Elsewhere the newspaper mentions that a second permit license of mobile telephony is to be granted within February.

The “Economic” inset of newspaper “Alithia” under the title “Black list from the Central Bank” highlights that the Central Bank is to hold a press conference today to announce the new instructions of the Central Records of Information and the Administration Committee over checks not covered.

Elsewhere the inset refers to EAC’s preparations for the new power supply network.
