The major issues in today’s financial press are the referral of two foreclosures bills by the President of the Republic yesterday, today’s Eurogroup meeting to be attended by the Finance Minister, Haris Georgiades, and the 24-hour strike of PASYDY after the government’s intention to tax the lump sum.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” refers to today’s Eurogroup meeting, which will be attended by the Finance Minister, Haris Georgiades. According to the report, Mr. Georgiades will keep a defence line that the Cyprus government remains committed to the implementation of the memorandum and everything else needed to restore the economy. He will also be in contact with the President of the Republic, in an attempt to overcome the involvement by the foreclosures bill. As part of these efforts, President Anastasiades referred to Parliament yesterday two of the six bills of the parties.

Elsewhere the newspaper refers to the 24hour strike by PASYDY on Friday, September 19 against the government’s intention to tax the lump sum.

The newspaper “Politis” refers to the referral of two foreclosures bills yesterday by the President of the Republic. According to the report, the disbursement of the next tranche and the restoration of the course of implementation of the program of the international lenders entails that the Parliament will accept the referral of the two bills and the hastening of the hearing of the referrals of the remaining six bills by the Supreme Court.

The “Economy” inset of the newspaper refers to the possible taxation of the lump sum received by the civil servants at their retirement. As noted, the executive committee of PASYDY, at an extraordinary meeting, decided to propose to the General Council of the trade union a 24hour strike on Friday, September 19 after examining the actions of the Finance Minister for new violations on the payroll and pension rights of the civil servants.

The newspaper “Simerini” refers to the decision of the President of the Republic to refer to the Parliament two of the six bills approved on Saturday. According to the report, this move aroused strong feelings to the opposition, which threatens to stop the main law on foreclosures. The government unsuccessfully attempts to appease the parties.

The newspaper “Haravgi” refers to the preparation of health plans within the framework of a new general health system. According to the report, the proposal was approved by the Council of Ministers on Wednesday and the changes that the bill will make show that the aim is a multi-insurance system and the service of private capital.

The “Economy” inset of the newspaper refers to the reappointment of Captain Andy Georgiou in Cyprus Airways after few months. Mr. Georgiou had been appointed by the Board of Directors as executive director of the company. According to the report, former CEO retired taking half million euros, was employed in another company, he did not like it and he returned with a salary of €90 thousand per annum.

The newspaper “Alithia” refers to the letter sent by the President of the Republic to the leaders of the political parties, urging them to appoint an expert in order prepare together a multi-bill on insolvency, to be approved by the Parliament the soonest possible. Ending up with a text and its approval by the Parliament may solve the crisis.

The “Economy” inset of the newspaper refers to the funds of €3.1 billion to be granted in the period 2014-2020 from the EU to the member states to relieve refugees and asylum seekers. Cyprus will receive €32 million for this purpose.
