Press: Fuel prices and US rates

The major issues in today’s financial press are the statements of the Commerce Minister against the opposition on the price of fuel, the deadlock in the negotiations with Eureko, the crisis in insurance, Cyprus Airways and the increase in the US rates.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” refers to the ongoing dispute between the Commerce Minister, Giorgos Lillikas and DISY Vice Chairman, Averof Neophytou on fuel prices. According to the report, the Minister criticized DISY for not abolishing the PNBS when it was in power.

Elsewhere the newspaper refers to the imminent pressures of the Social Securities Fund in the next few decades from the ageing of the population. The risks will continue even if the government adopts the extension of the retirement limit to the 65th year.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Politis” refers to the statements of the Commerce Minister, Giorgos Lillikas on fuel prices. According to the report, the Minister criticized DISY for not abolishing the PNBS system when it was in power.

“Politis” also refers to the deadlock in the negotiations for the acquisition of Universal Life by Eureko and the intention of the Bank of Cyprus and the Popular Bank to find other interested parties.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Haravgi” refers to the meeting between the Finance and Transport Ministers and the Board of Directors of Cyprus Airways to discuss the future of the national carrier. According to the report, it is still unknown whether the trade unions will accept the second revised proposal of the Labour Minister.

The newspaper also refers to the request for the approval of a supplementary budget of £1 million for the Cyprus Sports Organization.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Simerini” refers to the dispute between the Commerce Minister and the DISY Vice Chairman on fuel prices. According to the report, the Minister claims that Cypriot consumers pay less in fuel compared to other European citizens.

“Simerini” also refers to the deliberations of the House Audit Committee on cements and the criticisms for the lack of competition in the market.

The newspaper “Alithia” refers to the strike measures of the lorry drivers, which affect the island’s economy. According to the report, employers appealed for the suspension of measures.

The “Economy” inset of the newspaper refers to the efforts of the trade unions to improve the Labour Minister’s proposal for Cyprus Airways.

The newspaper “Financial Mirror” refers to the deliberations in Turkey in view of the EU decision on the start of accession talks. According to the report, Turkey is in front of a dilemma whether to recognize the Republic.

Elsewhere the newspaper refers to the Federal Reserve’s decision to raise interest rates in order to reduce inflation.
