The major issues in today’s financial press are CYSTAT’s data on the building permits in the first seven months of 2007, the statistics on tourist arrivals in September 2007 and the increase in the price of oil in the international markets.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” refers to the statistics’ data on the building permits in the first seven months of 2007. According to the report, the Cypriot citizens tend to buy properties in agricultural areas, where 2,874 permits have been issued in the aforementioned period against 2,774 in the corresponding period of 2006.

Elsewhere the newspaper reports that Cyprus ranks 22nd among 141 countries in investments, according to a UN report.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Politis” refers to the statistics on tourist arrivals in September 2007. According to the report, they recorded an increase of 6.4%, confirming the recovery in tourist arrivals in the past few months.

“Politis” also highlights that the new owner of the Cyprus Development Bank will be announced in few days.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Simerini” refers to the increase in the price of oil in the international markets. According to the report, it is likely that the price of all manufactured goods will be shot due to the price hike in crude oil.

The newspaper also reports that according to DISY Vice President, Averof Neophytou, Cyprus is the ninth most expensive country in the EU.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Haravgi” refers to the statements of AKEL spokesman, Andros Kyprianou on poverty. Speaking on behalf of the candidate for the Presidency, Demetris Christofias, Mr. Kyprianou said that 2.3% of the total income corresponds to 10% of the poorest households and 24% of the total income to the wealthiest 10%.

The newspaper also refers to the strikes in ports on November 6, if the supplementary budget of the Ports’ Authority is not submitted.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Alithia” refers to SEK’s announcement that it will claim rises beyond productivity within the framework of the renewal of the union contracts. According to SEK, the distribution of income is unfair.

Elsewhere the newspaper reports that the members of OEB want machines for the control of authenticity of the euro banknotes.
