Press: Increase of 2% in direct taxes

The major issues in today’s financial press are the IRD revenues in January – June, the Central Bank’s data on the deposits’ interest rates and the anticipated increase in cigarette taxes.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” refers to the Inland Revenue Department’s revenues in January – June 2008. According to the report, they recorded an increase of 2%, while the corresponding increase in 2007 was strong, reaching 50%.

Elsewhere the newspaper refers to the government’s decision to reduce the increased commitments in the Companies’ Superintendent’s Department and to simplify the procedures for the registration of the new companies.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Politis” refers to Central Bank’s data on the deposits’ interest rates. According to the report, in all categories of deposits the domestic banks offer higher rates with the exception of the deposits with a warning of more than three months for the households and immediate expiry for the businesses.

“Politis” also reports that the trade unions demand labour reforms from 2008.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Simerini” refers to the anticipated increase in cigarette taxes. According to the report, the European Commission will propose to EU27 to increases taxes on cigarettes.

The newspaper also highlights that summer sales started earlier than usually.
