Press: Inflation and strikes

The major issues in today’s financial press are the crisis in the hotel sector and the Maastricht criterion on inflation.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” reports that according to Eurostat, Cyprus is in line with the Maastricht criterion on inflation since the average annual inflation exceeds that of the three EU countries with the lowest rate by 0.90 percentage points.

Elsewhere the newspaper refers to the imposition of strict criteria for the banking consultants from September.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Politis” highlights that the pilots had a meeting with the Cyprus Airways Management on Thursday and both sides expressed their optimism that a solution will be found and the 48-hour strike will be called off.

“Politis” also refers to the further drop in the price of crude oil.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Haravgi” refers to PASYXE’s intention to request by its members to proceed to private negotiations with their employees so as to overcome the crisis in the hotel industry. However, this is expected to deepen the crisis and increase the expenses.

The newspaper also highlights that Latvia ranks first in house price growth.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Alithia” reports that the CTO appealed to all parties on Thursday to call-off the strikes on August 21-22.

“Alithia” also highlights that most EU employees in Cyprus in 2005 came from Greece and Poland.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Simerini” reports that the efforts for a call-off of the strikes in the hotel industry were unfruitful. The 48-hour strike will be launched on Monday.

Elsewhere the newspaper highlights that the pilots will decide on their strikes on Monday.
