Press: Papadopoulos elected Cyprus president

The major issue in today’s financial press is the election of Mr. Tassos Papadopoulos as the new Cyprus president, fifth president of the island since 1960.

The newspaper “Phileleftheros” under the title “FIRST-ROUND VICTORY” refers to the statements of the new President with regard to the Cyprus problem; “I am ready to negotiate the Annan plan”.

The newspaper “Alithia” under the title “People vote for uncertainty” highlights that the outgoing President Clerides was undermined and final results gave 51.51% to Mr. Papadopoulos.

The newspaper “Simerini” under the title “People vote for Papadopoulos” focuses on the statements of the new president that he will utilize Mr. Clerides’ experience and knowledge”.

The newspaper “THARROS” published by DISY MP, Sotiris Sampson, under the title “Anastasiades to write off DISY members” mentions that the DISY Chairman, Nicos Anastasiades, will write off the DISY members that supported the presidential candidate, Alecos Markides (Prodromou, Syllouris, Erotokritou, Vrachimi and Hadjiyianni).

The newspaper “Xaravgi” under the title “Cyprus people win” focuses on the declaration of Papadopoulos’ victory at the ‘Eleftheria Stadium’.

The newspaper “Politis” under the title “Easy Sunday in difficult times” reports that Tassos Papadopoulos is ready to negotiate, sending a direct message to the Turkish Cypriots. Papadopoulos got 51.51%, Clerides 38.80%, Markides 6.62% and Koutsou 2.12%.
