Press: Property tax same as last year

The major issues in today’s financial press are meeting of the party leaders and representatives to decide what will be voted to the Parliament today in relation to the property tax, borrowers’ file in Cyprus and the unit for the restructuring of loans in the Cooperatives.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” refers to the anticipated rejection of the bill for the taxation of properties by the plenary today. As noted, despite yesterday’s consultations and the elaboration of a number of scenarios for the imposition of tiered taxation on the 2013 prices, the House Finance Committee did not end up with any conclusion.

Elsewhere the newspaper reports that the government is will have to cover an accounting hole of €250 million for the Cooperatives.

The newspaper “Politis” refers to the meeting of the party leaders and representatives to decide what they will be voted to Parliament today for the property tax. According to the report, yesterday afternoon the most likely scenario appeared to be the maintenance of the current tax, based on the values of 1980, but with some changes that the parties will attempt to bring so as to reduce the maximum target for the tax revenue from 135 to 100-110 million.

The “Economy” inset of the newspaper refers to the operation of the borrowers’ file in Cyprus. As noted, the file will be inaugurated by October, including data for the good and bad debtors of the banks and the Cooperatives. The file is a MoU obligation.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Simerini” refers to the unit for the restructuring of loans in the Cooperatives. According to Central Bank data, the total restructuring of loans in the Cooperatives hardly reached €1.5 million or 11.3% of the total loans. The difference appearing in the percentage of restructurings compared to the banks is attributable to the fact that the unit for the NPLs in the Coops was launched a month ago.

The newspaper also reports that Chairman of Cyprus Airways, Tony Antoniou expressed the need to find an investor that will help the company on a long-term basis.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Haravgi” refers to yesterday’s meeting of CAIR Chairman, Tony Antoniou with EVROKO President, Demetris Syllouris. As noted, Mr. Antoniou stressed the need to find an investor that will help the national carrier in the long run. However, last Tuesday, the Communications Minister talked about an interest by a strategic investor.

“Haravgi” also reports that the Council of Ministers appointed yesterday three experts who will contribute to the investigations for the collapse of the economy.
