Press: Unemployment sharply up

The major issues in today’s financial press are CYSTAT’s data on the registered unemployed in March 2009 and the Finance Minister’s statements on the opening of a casino in Cyprus.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” refers to CYSTAT’s data on the registered unemployed in March. According to the figures, the number of unemployed reached 16,806 against 16,383 in February, while in the past six months unemployment has almost doubled since the people out of work in October were 9,983.

Elsewhere the newspaper reports that Chairman of the Cyprus Contractors’ Associations Federation, Sotos Lois, appealed to the government for the injection of the additional sum of €600 million in the market for the construction industry.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Politis” refers to CYSTAT’s data on the registered unemployed in March. According to the report, their number was shot to 16,806 persons. The increased unemployment is mostly attributable to the lower activity in the construction industry.

“Politis” also refers to the strategic reorganization of the activities of Shacolas Group.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Simerini” refers to the Finance Minister’s statements on the opening of a casino in Cyprus. According to the report, the government’s intention not to open a casino aroused strong feelings to the hoteliers and the CCCI.

The newspaper also reports that the CTO budget anticipates expenditure of €102 million this year.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Haravgi” reports that OECD classified Cyprus in the list of countries that are in line with all international tax standards and requirements for the exchange of information with other countries.

“Haravgi” also highlights that according to CYSTAT data, HICP fell to 0.9% in March.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Alithia” refers to the draft law for a VAT cut in restaurants. According to the report, al parliamentary parties except for AKEL brought back the bill for a VAT cut in restaurants.

Elsewhere the newspaper reports that according to CYSTAT data, the number of building permits recorded an increase in January 2009.
