Press: Wages in public sector a thorn

The major issues in today’s financial press are the submission of the state budget 2015 to the Parliament in the next ten days, the recent visit to Cyprus of Dominique Stross-Khan and his partner, Thierry Leyne for investments in the natural gas and the House Labour Committee’s session, which will discuss the changes agreed by the government and the troika on the working conditions of the public employees.

The “Economy” inset of newspaper “Phileleftheros” reports that the state budget 2015 will be tabled to the Parliament within the next ten days. According to the Finance Minister, it is a budget with slightly increased expenditure, which remains within the fiscal targets. Mrs. Georgiades ensured that the deliberations for the restructuring of the public service will continue when the government is ready to present certain structural changes and regulations securing the long-term viability of the public finances.

Elsewhere the newspaper reports that according to Archbishop Chrysostomos, there is great interest for investments in Cyprus by foreign investors mostly.

The newspaper “Politis” refers to the ceiling on governmental guarantees granted by the state to drain boards, semi-governmental organizations, local administration authorities and the central burden-sharing organization. As noted, the total governmental guarantees for loans allocated to third parties amount to €3.1 billion, €1.29 billion of which are for Liaki Bank and the European Financial Stability Fund.

The newspaper “Simerini’ refers to today’s House Labour Committee’s session, which will discuss the changes agreed by the government and the troika on the working terms of the public employees. According to sources, the Finance Ministry is considering changing the whole system as it noted exploitation of hitherto processes by the public employees, mainly in terms of sick leave.

The ‘Economy” inset of the newspaper reports that the Finance Ministry technocrats are working hard to prepare the alternatives primary in relation to the way that the lump sum is paid to the public employees. According to the Finance Minister, a common component of proposals to be submitted to the dialogue table with the trade unions of the employees in the public and broader public sector is the sustainability of the pension and the state payroll.
