LT unemployment increase highest in EU

Cyprus recorded the largest increase in long-term unemployment in 2014, according to figures released by Eurostat recently, reflecting the impact of the economic recession on labour market conditions.

According to the figures, long-term unemployment in Cyprus constituted 47.7% of the total unemployment recording an increase of 9.4% compared to 2013. This is the largest increase in the EU.

The increase in long-term unemployment in Cyprus exceeded that of Greece, where the labour market conditions are bad. Long-term unemployment's share in Greece rose by 6.4% to 73.5%.

Greece is followed by Slovenia with an increase of 3.5% and Spain by 3.2%.

On the other hand, the largest decreases were registered in Latvia (-5.5%), Croatia (-5.3%) and Romania (-4.1%).

The long-term unemployment stood at 49.3% of the total on average in the EU in 2014, recording an increase of 2.1% compared to 2013.

According to the data, the largest long-term unemployment share after Greece is observed in Slovakia (70.2%), Italy (60.8%) and Bulgaria (60.4%). On the other hand, the lowest shares are registered in Sweden (18.2%), Finland (22.1%) and Denmark (25.2%).
