Tougher measures for the builders

14/02/2012 14:28
The trade unions of the construction workers threaten to remove subcontractors from the construction sites, as a reaction to the stalemate in the renewal of the union contract in the construction industry.

This measure follows today’s 24hour warning strike against the breach of the union contracts, as they support.

Following the declaration of the strike in the morning, the trade unions approved a resolution handed to OSEOK, warning that measures will escalate if OEB’s letter for the non payment of COLA is not withdrawn immediately and if the replacement of employees by cheaper ones does not stop.

Approximately 3 thousand strikers participated in the march, shouting slogans and being critical to the employers related to the violation of union contracts. Strikers reached OSEOK offices and delivered the resolution to OEB General Manager, Nicos Kelepesiis.

The resolution calls on employers to accept the mediatory proposal of the Labour Ministry that provides for the settlement of issues stemming from the Agreement.

They also expressed their readiness to respond to any call of the mediatory service for the renewal of the union contract and the settlement of problems pending in the construction industry.

On the other hand, OSEOK General Manager, Mr. Kelepesiis, criticized the trade unions that they are actually violating the union contract.

He reiterated, however, that OEB’s letter cannot be withdrawn and urged the trade unions to start talks for the renewal of the contracts.

Commenting on the trade unions’ intention to remove subcontractors from the work sites, he said that if they want to give the final blow to the construction sector, they may do so. “But they must know that they are accountable to society and the people led to unemployment”, he concluded.
