Government employment rises by 0.7% in September due to temporary employees

Government employment in Cyprus rose by an annual 0.7% in September with the annual increase driven by temporary employment.
 
According to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat), in September 2021 total government employment increased by 366 persons (0.7%) compared with the respective period of 2020 and reached 52,408 persons.
 
Permanent staff decreased by 653 persons or -2.4%, from 27,045 to 26,392 persons. Casual staff increased by 1,111 persons or 6,7% reaching 17,593 persons compared to 16,482 persons in September 2020.
 
Compared to September 2020 an increase is observed in all three categories, with the highest in Education staff (2.3%). All three categories of permanent staff marked annual reduction with the highest observed in Civil Service staff (-3.0%), Cystat said.
 
On the contrary, in all three categories of casual staff marked annual increase with the highest registered in Education staff with 10.9%.
 
Compared to August 2021, an increase is observed in Education staff (1.5%) while a decrease is observed in Security Forces staff (-0.3%) and in Civil Service staff (-0.1%).
 
In all three categories of permanent staff there is a decrease and the highest is observed in Education staff (-1.2%). 
 
In casual staff an increase is observed in Education staff (7.3%) and in Civil Service staff (0.4%) while a decrease is observed in Security Forces staff (-0.4%), Cystat added.
