Bankers waiting for ministry’s decision

Bank managements and the union of employees are waiting for the labor ministry's decision in relation to the labor dispute at Hellenic Bank.

The decision is expected to signal developments in labor issues of other banks amid bankers’ efforts to challenge the industrial relations code which is applied since 1979.

ETYK appealed to the Ministry against Hellenic Bank citing the practice regarding executives’ recruitment which is applied for decades and provides that hiring is also authorized by the union’s side.

Despite the disagreement of the banks’ association in terms of this process, banks adopted the practice over the years. ETYK argues that the new management of the Hellenic Bank unilaterally overturned it recently, by hiring four new managers.

HB supports that the filling of managerial positions is a benefit of the management.

As a spokesman of the banks’ union told StockWatch, if the mediation service of the Ministry of Labour rules that hiring managers is a prerogative of the managements of banks, then, as noted, this will open the door for the other banks.

Differences remain

Yesterday the senior management of the Hellenic Bank and the leadership of ETYK had a long meeting at which the three "thorns" that caused the labor crisis at Hellenic Bank, were discussed.

These are the issues of overtime working, hiring managers and the freezing of providing loans to staff at attractive interest rates.

The message coming from the senior management of the Bank is that differences on these three subjects between the two sides were confirmed.

However, both parties agreed to return to dialogue next Tuesday in a new effort to end the deadlock.

HB employees abstain from any overtime working, during the past eight days.

ETYK received authorization by the provincial assemblies of its HB members last Tuesday to proceed to any strong measures whenever the leadership deems necessary.

Labour relations are expected to be also discussed today by the Board of the Bank of Cyprus.
