Concerns for layoffs in CPB

Candidate for the Presidency, Giorgos Lillikas expressed concerns about the 600 imminent layoffs in Cyprus Popular Bank within the framework of the restructuring plan.

“We have observed that very easily, 600 employees of Cyprus Popular Bank run the risk of being added to the 40,000 unemployed of Cyprus. They want to burden the bank employees with responsibilities on mismanagement and the criminal mistakes of the golden boys. If there is indeed a need for mass dismissals, a comprehensive voluntary early retirement plan must be submitted, which will secure the labour rights of the employees”, he said in a written statement.

"We also note that for the actual responsibilities assigned to the banking system, an independent investigation must be carried out by the Investigation Committee, which has the legal rights and power to secure testimonies from everyone involved and can recommend criminal prosecution, if this appears from the findings. We reiterate that only by performing legal investigation in the banking system we will be able to lay the foundation for rapid recovery and consolidation”, he stressed.
