Government employment up by 0.7% in September

The number of employees working in the public sector was up in September by 0.7% due to hiring of temporary staff in the education sector, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service show.
 
In particular, according to the official data, government employment in September was up by 346 people or 0.7% compared to September 2018 reaching 51,792.

A drop of 538 people is observed in permanent staff, or 1.9% down to 27,983 people from 28,521.

An increase of 7.1% is recorded in the temporary staff while the greatest increase is attributed to new staff hired by the Educational Service (2.9%) and in particular 639 temporary staff or up by 22.5%.

Temporary staff has recorded an increase of 7.1% reaching 15,192 employees compared to 14,185 people in September 2018.

In relation to August 2019, an increase of 1.2% in the education sector staff has been recorded mainly due to temporary staff (12.3%).
Public sector staff remained stable while security forces staff dropped by 31 people or 0.2%.
