Government employment up by 2.4% in January

Government employment in January 2020 reached 52,424 persons marking an increase of 1,215 persons or 2.4% year on year.

According to data released today by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat) the annual increase is solely attributed to temporary staff which rose by 7.2% to 16,142 persons in January 2020 from 15,056 in the respective month of last year.

Permanent staff declined by 708 persons or 2.5%, from 28,518 to 27,810 persons.

Compared to January 2019 there is an increase of staff in all personnel categories except Civil Service, with the largest increase observed in Education with 2.9% pushed upwards by temporary employment which rose by 17.5%, Cystat added.

On a monthly basis (compared with December 2019), government employment declined by a marginal 0.1% mainly due to the decline of temporary employment in Education and Security Forces which dropped by 0.3% respectively.
