Government employment continues rising

Government employment continued its upward trajectory in May solely due to an increase in temporary staff.

According to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat), in May 2021 total government employment increased by 983 persons or 1.9% year on year reaching reached 53,308 persons.

Permanent staff decreased by 982 persons or 3.5%, from 27,668 to 26,686 persons, while temporary employees increased by 2,010 persons or 12.4% amounting to 18,195 persons compared to 16,185 persons in May 2020.

Compared to May 2020 employees in education increased by 7.6% and Civil Service staff by 0.1%, while a decrease of 0.4% was recorded in Security Forces staff. A drop is observed in all three categories of permanent staff, Cystat said, adding that the highest decrease is in Education staff with 3.9%.
 
Concerning temporary staff all three categories rose compared with May 2020 with employees in Education recording the highest increase amounting to 34.5%.
 
Compared to April 2021, an increase is observed in Civil Service staff (0.1%) while a decrease is observed in Education staff (0.3%) and in Security Forces staff (0.2%).
 
In permanent staff an increase is observed in Civil Service staff (0.1%) while a decrease is observed in Security Forces staff (0.2%). In casual staff an increase is observed in Civil Service staff (0.2%) while a drop is recorded in Education staff (0.9%) and in Security Forces staff (0.3%), Cystat added.
