Government employment decrease slightly in May

Government employment in May 2020 decreased both on annual basis and in relation to April 2020, according to a report by the Statistical Service of Cyprus.

Compared to April 2020, government employment decreased by 325 persons or by 0,6%.  A decrease was observed in all the categories except Security Forces where it increased by 0.3% (42 persons). The largest decrease was observed in Education (-2.5%) and more specifically in the number of casual staff which decreased by -7.9% (356 persons).

In May 2020 total government employment decreased by 315 persons (-0.6%) in comparison to the corresponding month of 2019 and reached 52,325 persons. Permanent staff decreased by 688 persons (-2.4%), from 28,356 to 27,668 persons. Casual staff increased by 567 persons (3.6%) and reached 16,185 persons compared to 15,618 persons in May 2019.

Compared to May 2019 there is a decrease in Civil Service staff (-0.8%) and more specifically in the permanent staff (-3.0%), an increase in Education staff (0.2%) and more specifically in casual staff (6.6%) while the staff of Security Forces remained stable.
