Government employment increases in December

In December 2020 total government employment increased by 255 persons (0.4%) in comparison to the corresponding month of 2019 and reached 52,695 persons, according to figures released on Monday by CyStat.

The figures show that permanent staff decreased by 968 persons (-3.5%), from 27,849 to 26,881 persons. Casual staff increased by 1,403 persons (8.7%) and reached 17,556 persons compared to 16,153 persons in December 2019.

Compared to December 2019 an increase is observed in Education staff (3.6%) and in Civil Service staff (0.3%) while a decrease is observed in Security Forces staff (-0.9%). In all three categories of permanent staff there is a decrease and the highest is observed in Civil Service staff (-3.9%). On the contrary, in all three categories of temporary staff there is an increase and the highest is observed in Education staff (20.0%).
 
CyStat figures also show that compared to November 2020, an increase is observed in Education staff (0.9%) while a decrease is observed in Civil Service staff (-0.3%) and in Security Forces staff (-0.1%). In permanent staff there is a decrease in Civil Service staff (-0.2%) and in Security Forces staff (-0.1%). In casual staff, an increase is observed in Education staff (2.5%) whereas a decrease is observed in Civil Service staff  (-0.4%) and in Security Forces staff (-0.1%).
