Government labour force rises in May

The government’s labour force rose slightly by 0.9% on an annual basis in May 2019 driven solely by hiring in temporary staff.
 
According to the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat), the government’s labour force increased by 471 persons, compared to to the corresponding month of 2018 and reached 52.527 persons.
 
Permanent staff decreased by 590 persons or -1,7%, whereas temporary staff increased by 6.4% reaching 17,575 persons compared to 16,514 persons in May 2018.
 
The largest increase is observed in Education (2.6%) and more specifically in the number of temporary staff which increased by 1.5% (522 persons).
 
Compared to April 2019 the number of persons of all categories increased except in Security Forces where the number of persons decreased by 0.2%. The highest increase is observed in Hourly Paid Workers (2.3%) driven by the increase of 12.0% in the temporary staff, Cystat added.
