Government will safeguard fiscal stability and common sense of justice

Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou has said that the Goverment ought to preserve fiscal stability and the common sense of justice, and it would make sure it will do so, referring to recent rulings of the Administrative Court that pay cuts imposed on public servants` salaries in 2012 were unconstitutional and invalid.

Prodromou has said that at Monday`s meeting among the President of the Republic, the Minister of Finance and political party leaders there will be an exhange of views about the Court`s decision.

In an interview with the CNA last Tuesday, President Anastasiades had said that apart from appealing the decisions at Supreme Court level the government was studying various steps, adding that he intended to convene a meeting of parliamentary party leaders so that different options could be discussed collectively.

"There are no bills to be voted at this moment" Prodromou told the press on Saturday, adding that "we have to wait for the appeal to be made and see what its fate would be at the Supreme Court".

"The Government`s general position is that it ought to safeguard fiscal stability and the common sense of justice, and it will make sure it will do so" he stressed.

The President, said Prodromou, taking into account the fact that the decision to go ahead with pay cuts in the public sector was made collectively by all the political parties, has deemed it right and useful to convene the meeting at the Presidential Palace on Monday.

"We shall wait for the exhange of views on Monday among the President, the Finance Minister and the political powers" he concluded.
