The threat of unemployment for the Greek Cypriots is stronger than for other employees on the island, latest Labour Ministry data showed.
The upward trend followed by unemployment especially in the last two years and the deteriorating labour market conditions due to the effects of the financial crisis proved much more harmful for locals than for other nationalities.

Based on data from the Labour Force Survey conducted by the Statistics Service in July 2013, the registered unemployed totaled 48.001, of which 38.303 are Greek Cypriots.

The number of Greek Cypriots registered unemployed increased by 39% compared to July last year, when they amounted to 27,508 of all registered unemployed.

Overall, the Greek Cypriots constituted 80% of the unemployed in July 2013, compared to 75% last July.

The new data on employment highlight the disadvantaged position of the Greek Cypriots against foreign and often cheaper labour force.

The increase is smaller among European citizens (13%), foreign (19%) and recognized political refugees (8%).

On the other hand, a decrease is observed among the Turkish Cypriots (-13%) and persons with subsidiary protection status (-74%), which are among the list of the registered unemployed.

The largest annual increase of the unemployed among the Greek Cypriots was observed in Limassol where there was an increase of 44%.

Greek Cypriots in Limassol unemployed amounted to 11.304 or 81% of all registered unemployed from 7.862 or 77% last July.
