Jobless in March 2022 dropped by 58%

The number of registered unemployed persons in Cyprus dropped by an annual 58% in March 2022, driven mainly by reductions in the tourist sector and retail and wholesale trade, the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat) has said.

According to Cystat, the unemployed persons, registered at the District Labour Offices on the last day of March 2022, reached 13,818 persons, while based on the seasonally adjusted data that show the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed for March 2022 decreased to 13,555 persons from 13,664 in February 2022.

Compared with March 2021, the number of registered unemployed persons declined by 19,115 persons or 58.0%.

The reduction is attributed mainly to the sectors of accommodation and food service activities (a decrease of 4,012), trade (a decrease of 3,889), construction (a decrease of 1,346), manufacturing (a decrease of 1,252), transportation and storage (a decrease of 910), as well as to the decrease of 1,582 persons recorded in newcomers to the labour market.

In March 2022, the sectors associated with tourism, retail and wholesale trade and constructions showed the highest number of unemployed persons with 3,481, 2,270 and 1,035 respectively.
