Based on the seasonally adjusted data that show the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed for May 2021 decreased to 33,816 persons in comparison to 34,074 in the previous month, Cystat added.

The number of registered unemployed persons in Cyprus recorded an annual rise for the 14th consecutive month in May, but has been growing at slower pace since last February, reflecting the improved conditions to do with the pandemic and an easing of restrictions in place.

According to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat), unemployed people registered at the District Labour Offices on the last day of May 2021, were 31,287, recording an increase of 1,683 persons or 5.7% compared to May of 2020. This is the lowest annual increase since the outbreak of the pandemic.

According to Cystat, the increase in comparison to May 2020 is mainly attributed to the sector of trade, where jobless rose by 840 persons, construction with 762 persons, professional, scientific and technical activities with 327 persons, manufacturing with 302, education with 290 new jobless persons and newcomers in the labour market with 997 persons.
