Strike by airport workers against BOT

01/11/2001 09:26
The House will today examine and reach a decision on the controversial bill for amendment of legislation concerning airports, approval of which will allow the implementation of the Build, Operate, Transfer method, BOT, by which strategic investors will be able to build and manage the airports, transferring them back to the state after a number of years.

The matter has caused the reaction of labour organisations and the unions SEK, PEO, PASYDY and DEOK have announced a four-hour strike of airport staff today, a number of whom will protest outside the House whilst the bill is being examined. The strike is not expected to cause disruptions to flights however, as this was announced from beforehand to the Ministry of Communications & Works and measures have already been taken towards to ensure the smooth running of operations today.
