Unemployment drops to 10.6%

Unemployment dropped to 10.6% in the second quarter of this year compared to 12.1% in the same quarter of last year, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service show.

According to a Statistical Service press release on the basis of the Labour Force Survey findings, the labour force in the 2nd quarter of 2017 amounted to 424,807 persons or 61.4% of the population, of who men 66,6% and women accounted for 56,7%, compared to 47,080 persons or 61.3% in the same quarter of 2016.

The number of employed persons came to 379,842 and the employment rate 54.9%, of who men 59.9% and women 50.4%, compared to 366,742 persons or 53.9% in the corresponding quarter last year.

The number of unemployed persons amounted to 44,965 and the unemployment rate to 10.6% of the labour force compared to 50,339 persons or 12.1% in the same quarter of 2016.

Employment reached 71% for the age group 20-64 or 76.2% for men and 66.2% for women. In the corresponding quarter of 2016 the rate was 69.8% (74.9% men an 65% women).

For the age group 55-64 the employment rate was 53.7% compared to 52.9% in the 2nd quarter of 2016.

On the basis of the distribution of employment by sector, the biggest percentage of employed persons was in the area of services (80.3%), followed by manufacturing (17.3%) and agriculture (2.4%).

In the 2nd quarter of 2016, the corresponding percentages were for services 79.4%, manufacturing 16.9% and agriculture 3.7%.

The share of part-time employment to total employment was 12.8% or 48,666 persons (10.3% men, 15.6% women).

The corresponding rate for the 2nd quarter of 2016 was 14.1% (12.2% men, 16.1% women).

Employees account for 87.3% or 331,694 of the total employed persons, of which 16% or 53,221 persons had a temporary job. In the same quarter of last year employees accounted for 85.3% of total employment while 18.5% of them had a temporary job.
