Unemployment remains high

Unemployment in Cyprus remains high in spite of indications of improvement in the labour market.

According to figures released today by Eurostat the unemployment rate in Cyprus in December remained at 15,7% as in November 2015. In December 2014 it had reached 16,5%.

The rate is the fourth highest in the EU after Greece, Spain and Croatia. In Greece, unemployment stood at 24,5% (October 2015), in Spain at 20,8% and in Croatia 16,5%.

According to the report, the number of unemployed people in Cyprus reached 66 thousand in December as in November 2015 and from 71 thousand in December 2014.

The unemployment rate among young people (under 25) reached 31,7%.

In the EU and eurozone unemployment remained at the same high levels of recent months.

In the EU-28 unemployment stood at 9% as in the previous month, while in the euro zone it was 10,4% from 10,5%.

The number of unemployed people is estimated at 21,9 mn in the EU of which 16.8 mn are in the eurozone.

Among EU Member States, the lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Germany (4,5%), the Czech Republic (4,5%) and Malta (5,1%).

Eurostat figures refer to the total number of unemployed people while those of Cystat, to the registered unemployed only.
